Forest Insect and Disease Identification
& Management Workshop

Delta Colonial Hotel, Helena, MT - Legislative Room

At this FREE workshop, you will learn to identify common forest pests and understand
appropriate management options, particularly in relation to their specific management
objectives. This workshop will be held indoors with a diversity of presentations, samples,
practical exercises, and publications. We will distribute “A Field Guide to Diseases and Insect
Pests of Northern and Central Rocky Mountain Conifers” and work through practical exercises
so that landowners can confidently use it while assessing their own forests. Landowners are
welcome to bring samples from their property for identification during the coffee session.

8:50 - 9:00AM/ Overview of Forests Ecology:
    Role of insect and disease impacts on forest health
9:00 - 9:45AM/ Forest Insects: Bark beetles and defoliators
9:45 -10:15AM/ Insect Samples: With field guide exercise
10:15 -10:30AM/ Break:
10:30 -11:30AM/ Forest Diseases: Root disease, shoot blights, stem rusts, & mistletoe
11:30AM -12:00PM/ Disease samples and field guide exercise:
12:00 -12:30PM/ Adjourn: Instructors available for individual questions and discussion

Instructors:
Amy Gannon and Jill Hautaniemi work as specialists in the DNRC Forest Pest Management Program. Although Amy is primarily trained as an entomologist and Jill as a pathologist, their interest in Montana forest ecology broadly encompasses many disciplines. Together, they work with private landowners and natural resource professionals to identify and manage forest insects and diseases across the state.
